You can found sharing option to right click on an item in nautilus.

When you check on "Allow others to create and delete files in this folder" then anyone can edit and delete files in network but they need to know your samba username and password.

When anyone try to access your content he/she will be asked for your samba username and password. If he/she know the authentication information then he/she can see, edit and delete your content you share.

If you uncheck "Allow others....." then other (who knows authentication info) only see and copy the content but can not create or delete content.

If you want that Any one in the network can see your content the check the "Guest access ..." option. Where anyone can see the file without knowing your authentication information.

Add samba user in this file:

    sudo gedit /etc/samba/smbusers

Format is <ubuntuusername> = <sambausername></sambausername></ubuntuusername>. So you can map your ubuntu username with different username for samba but this is not necessary. Example: say, your username is abc then add this line to /etc/samba/smbusers

   abc = "abc"

Thats means anyone can access with abc username. you can use different name on right side.

Now set password for samba abc user (not your ubuntu user) password.

    sudo smbpasswd -a username [abc]

Stop unnecessary applications at startup

A list of applications start when ubuntu load. Most of the applications are useful and also some applications are not necessary for every user. Example: Update manager is useful but every time it appears without any warning. In the following demonstration we will learn how to discover all start-up applications, prevent them to start and re-enable them.

Discover Application's:

All the start-up application's launcher save in "/etc/xdg/autostart". You can easily see the list

ls /etc/xdg/autostart

How to Disable:

If we open a launcher(.desktop file) in text-editor(Drag & Drop on gedit) we will see a field named: NoDisplay=false

Change the false value with true which disable the application. You can edit using text editor and save it. Another easy approach is the command line

sudo sed --in-place 's/NoDisplay=false/NoDisplay=true/g' /etc/xdg/autostart/update-notifier.desktop

In this example i disable update-notifier.

Note: Do not delete any file from /etc/xdg/autostart.

Best AMD/ATI driver for ubuntu

If you have new AMD/ATI graphics notebook or desktop then i am quite sure you are facing Driver problem. I did also. From my experience i will describe the best driver for ATI and also why.

There are two kinds of driver exists.
1. Provided by ATI company
2. Open source Driver (Developed by ubuntu developer)

Best Driver ever: Open source driver (Gallium3D / Gallium 0.4

Why should not use ATI provided driver ?
Because it is a handicap driver. ATI developer just simulate windows 3D driver working procedure. So it does not provide best service for Xorg.

Open source driver is the best with KMS support. Now question is how could you install it? Way is too simple. It is already installed and you need to just enable it.

Step1: Remove AMD provided (catalyst) driver if you have install it link.
Step2: Need to help kernel to detect your hardware specification. KMS(Kernel Mode Settings) is best way to do this. It automatically detect hardware in boot. Do not need to manually change /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Step3: Enable KMS ->
                 sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
Find this line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = and replace the line with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=radeon.modeset=1
        Save and close the file
Step4: Update the grub: sudo update-grub
Step5: Restart and after restart kernel will automatically detect your PC's hardware.
Step6: You can see your driver information from System settings-> Systeminfo
Step7: See the Frame rate : glxgears [output should be around you monitor refresh rate(60)]
Step8: Your Graphics card information : glxinfo | less
Step9: Test your graphics using these options: glxgears or glxheads or glxdemo

How to install openGL(glut library) in ubuntu

To develop program in openGL , you need to install freeglut lib in you system. Who have INTERNET problem in LINUX(ubuntu) can use portable apps. It is a executable binary file and just need one double-click to run.

How to Install: Do not need to install. just run application with double click. Don't forget to change executable permission after download. Linux does not allow default executable permission for any downloaded file for security reason.

How to change Permission after Download : open terminal. Change directory to downloaded folder
sudo chmod a+x apps_name

How to run : Just double click. :)

Where to download : Now you can download some popular apps from
portablelinuxapps.org

Advantage of portable apps: One click to run. No installation problem and dependency. Can save for next use and many more

Disadvantage : It's build with redundant dependencies, so this apps file will occupy more hard disk space (Don't afraid not too much).

Careful : If you want you can same app's file anywhere (any linux pc), But only copy of apps file does not contain the previous works or settings. Most of the application save their configuration and cache file in home directory. So if you want this application ready with previous configuration and work then don't forget to copy (hidden file) .application_name folder.

Create your own repositories (install software from local folder in ubuntu)

Ubuntu software are free so we can not buy it form market. Now backup sources.list file
/etc/apt/sources.list [keep a copy this file]

now edit sources.list with gedit(editor) delete everything and add
deb file:your_archive_parent_direcotry ./

Your system is ready. you can install software using synaptic or terminal. use update command before install
sudo apt-get update

Ubuntu Software Installation

We always know software installation is very complicated in LINUX. OH MY GOD! Is it really true?
Ok Lets find out. I will explain this with the help of some question.

1. Why we think application installation is complicated ? It is only for programmer !

ANS: Actually we are so much used to windows. In windows application installation we buy a CD containing application folder and click setup.exe to start installation and next next next ... finish. But in Linux all packages are available in INTERNET. Just install any package in oneClick from software center or synaptic manager. Even you don't have to know where is your package in internet. We do not familiar with this kind of installation process, so IT IS SO HARD OMG!

2. Why command line installation ?
ANS: LINUX architecture is based on UNIX. So it was developed when there was no graphical interface in OS. Linux doest not change there program just include a graphical interface between a program and user. But command line is more speedy if you are a skillful user. Because Graphical interface actually take input from user and run command for a commnad-line program and show the output in a organized way.

3. Basic Software installation process.

ANS: First of all when LINUX is newly installed then it does not have any information about packages where to download and install. So first up-to-date your system.
up-to-date: Click Reload button in Synaptic manager application. It automatically update package information
Second, system is ready. Just check desire package and press apply button. Installation complete in one or two click.

4. What is dependency?

ANS: Suppose someone already developed a packages which generate machine code from source code. I want to develop a IDE which will be used as source code editor , convert source code to machine code and highlight syntax and run file. So i do not need to develop a program which convert source code to machine code because which is already developed by someone. I just use it and develop my other jobs. So my application depends on other's packages. It is called dependency.

5. Why dependency?

ANS: According to previous ans it will take too many to develop a program for source code converter. SO it reduce development time, individuals application size.

6. What about others who have no INTERNET connection?

ANS: They also can use LINUX and install new applications but for that they need packages. There are some easy steps like aptoncd to install offline packages.

[ubuntu] how to install remastersys to create custom ubuntu CD

Remastersys is a tool that can be used to do 2 things with an existing Klikit or Ubuntu or derivative installation. It can make a full system backup including personal data to a live cd or dvd that you can use anywhere and install. It can make a distributable copy you can share with friends. This will not have any of your personal user data in it.

Install Remastersys in Ubuntu

The Remastersys repository needs to be added to your /etc/apt/sources.list

sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list

Paste the following into the sources.list:

# Remastersys
deb http://www.remastersys.klikit-linux.com/repository remastersys/

Save and exit the file.

Update the source list using the following command

sudo apt-get update

Install remastersys using the following command

sudo apt-get install remastersys

This will complete the installation

Using Remastersys

In order to learn how you can use remastersys, run

sudo remastersys

remastersys Syntax

sudo remastersys backup|clean|dist [cdfs|iso] [filename.iso]

remastersys Examples

1) to make a livecd/dvd backup of your system

sudo remastersys backup

2) to make a livecd/dvd backup and call the iso custom.iso

sudo remastersys backup custom.iso

3) to clean up temporary files of remastersys

sudo remastersys clean

4) to make a distributable livecd/dvd of your system

sudo remastersys dist

5) to make a distributable livecd/dvd filesystem only

sudo remastersys dist cdfs

6) to make a distributable iso named custom.iso but only if the cdfs is already present

sudo remastersys dist iso custom.iso

cdfs and iso options should only be used if you wish to modify something on the cd before the iso is created. An example of this would be to modify the isolinux portion of the livecd/dvd

Creating An ISO Image

To create an iso image of your installation, simply run

sudo remastersys dist

This will create an iso image called customdist.iso in the /home/remastersys directory. The dist option makes that your personal folder (e.g. /home/ruchi) will not be included in the iso image. You might have to insert your Ubuntu installation CD during the process.

This is how the end of the process looks:

[...]
92.16% done, estimate finish Wed DEC 28 15:31:25 2007
93.39% done, estimate finish Wed DEC 28 15:31:25 2007
94.62% done, estimate finish Wed DEC 28 15:31:24 2007
95.85% done, estimate finish Wed DEC 28 15:31:24 2007
97.08% done, estimate finish Wed DEC 28 15:31:25 2007
98.31% done, estimate finish Wed DEC 28 15:31:25 2007
99.54% done, estimate finish Wed DEC 28 15:31:25 2007
Total translation table size: 2048
Total rockridge attributes bytes: 3950
Total directory bytes: 9094
Path table size(bytes): 54
Max brk space used 0
406890 extents written (794 MB)

/home/remastersys/customdist.iso is ready to be burned or tested in a virtual machine.

Check the size and if it is larger than 700MB you will need to burn it to a dvd

796M /home/remastersys/customdist.iso

Clean Up

After you’ve burnt the iso image onto a CD/DVD, you can run

sudo remastersys clean

to remove all temporary file created during the iso generation as well as the /home/remastersys directory.

[Ubuntu] wine directory space problem

Wine is a powerful emulator to run some windows software. Wine's default directory in ~/.wine/drive_c. But problem is when we try to install Window's soft it only install on this directory. And another problem is most of us do not have much space in home (filesystem) directory. So we want to move our wine to other drive. OK here is the solution.
CUT drive_c from ~/.wine to your desire drive. Right click on drive_c and make a link. Cut the link to ~/.wine and rename it to drive_c. SO problem solve. All software read it's directory on ~/.wine and works well, but actually this space on other drive.
Some useful Windows software run in wine:

1. It is checked it's filesystem after every 30 boot and fix if find any error. But if you have any doubt about your filesystem then your can make force your os to check it on next boot.
See How linux know that it's time to check disk. It just count the boot and when the number of boot is 30 then it just create a file named forcefck on root (/) directory. When OS found forckfck file on startup then it just start the disk check. So to check your filesystem on next boot just manually create a file on root directory.

code: sudo touch /forcefck

Docbar (Supar bar in windows 7)

Dockbar is a awesome feature in ubuntu. This will not have any of your personal user data in it.

Install Remastersys in Ubuntu

The Remastersys repository needs to be added to your /etc/apt/sources.list

sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list

Paste the following into the sources.list:

# Remastersys
deb http://www.remastersys.klikit-linux.com/repository remastersys/

Save and exit the file.

Update the source list using the following command

sudo apt-get update

Install remastersys using the following command

sudo apt-get install remastersys

This will complete the installation

Using Remastersys

In order to learn how you can use remastersys, run

sudo remastersys

remastersys Syntax

sudo remastersys backup|clean|dist [cdfs|iso] [filename.iso]

remastersys Examples

1) to make a livecd/dvd backup of your system

sudo remastersys backup

2) to make a livecd/dvd backup and call the iso custom.iso

sudo remastersys backup custom.iso

3) to clean up temporary files of remastersys

sudo remastersys clean

4) to make a distributable livecd/dvd of your system

sudo remastersys dist

5) to make a distributable livecd/dvd filesystem only

sudo remastersys dist cdfs

6) to make a distributable iso named custom.iso but only if the cdfs is already present

sudo remastersys dist iso custom.iso

cdfs and iso options should only be used if you wish to modify something on the cd before the iso is created. An example of this would be to modify the isolinux portion of the livecd/dvd

Creating An ISO Image

To create an iso image of your installation, simply run

sudo remastersys dist

This will create an iso image called customdist.iso in the /home/remastersys directory. The dist option makes that your personal folder (e.g. /home/ruchi) will not be included in the iso image. You might have to insert your Ubuntu installation CD during the process.

This is how the end of the process looks:

[...]
92.16% done, estimate on your computer. Most Windows XP products including Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition install the same way

Before you start, ensure that your hardware is correctly installed, then place your Windows CD into the CD or DVD drive on your computer and reboot your system. If you don’t have your BIOS set to boot from CD before your hard drive, you will likely encounter problems. However you can go into the BIOS by pressing the appropriate key when prompted during the POST (Power On Self Test). Typically, you will press the “delete” or "F2" key, but this can vary from one motherboard and BIOS to another.

Once you are in the BIOS settings, look for the boot sequence tabs. Each motherboard vendor usually has a different BIOS set up. Check your motherboard owner’s manual for more information if you can’t find the boot settings menu. Once you have modified the BIOS settings, save them, exit the BIOS and reboot. If the boot sequence is correct, you should see the screen reading “Windows is preparing for installation”.

After you accept the EULA, you will be taken to a screen that asks you to choose your file system. Your options are NTFS (New Technology File System) or FAT32 (File Allocation Table 32). FAT32 is the older file system used with Windows 98. NTFS is the preferred choice for a Windows XP installation and our recommendation. The NTFS file system has improved functionality for security and data integrity and was first introduced in the Windows NT operating system. Choose the file system for your installation and press “F” to begin the formatting and installation. If you had any data on the hard drive you are using, it will be lost at this point. However, if you took our advice earlier and backed up your files, you should be okay.

Once the format is successful, the Windows installation process automatically installs the required files and reboots when needed. After a couple of reboots you will be asked to activate Windows by choosing a user name and a password. Windows activation is the process of enabling unrestricted use of Windows via your Internet connection with the Microsoft servers. If you don’t complete activation during the initial loading, Windows will shut down after 30 days and you won’t be able to use it. But don’t worry -- you do have 30 days to activate it after the first time it runs.

There are very few motherboards utilizing a network (RJ45) jack for broadband connection that do not require drivers to operate. If the network jack on your motherboard requires drivers and you use a broadband connection to access the internet, you won’t be able to use the internet to activate Windows until you install the drivers on your hard drive. If you are connecting via dial-up, you will need to make sure the drivers for your modem are installed before activating. If you don’t have an internet connection just yet, your Windows software paperwork should have come with a number you can call to activate. Once the drivers are installed, you will be able to select “Activate Windows” in the Start menu to complete with Windows activation process.

After a fresh install, the icons for some of the familiar Windows components like “My Computer”, “My Documents” and others will not be on your desktop. If you want to add them, simply right click your mouse in a vacant space on the Windows desktop. Select “properties”, then “desktop”, then choose “customize desktop” at the bottom of that window. You will see check boxes for the common desktop icons there as well as the checkbox for the clean desktop wizard. Once you choose the icons you want on the desktop, select “apply” and close the window.
